How do I start?

Just show up at one of our practices. We normally have a Sunday afternoon practice and a weeknight practice, depending on the time of year and availability of practice sites. Sometimes we schedule an 8-week Beginner Class (usually in the Fall), but even if there isn't a class going, we will teach you the basics.

Who can participate?

Anyone over the age of 18 can play as long as you are not medically prevented from participating in a sport. You do not have to be a member of the SCA.

What should I wear?

You should wear comfortable pants and closed-toe shoes with good traction. Few people have fencing shoes, but any raquet-type sport shoes (raquetball, tennis) work well. Please wear shoes with non-marking soles when we are inside the gym. You should wear socks that adequately cover your lower legs if your pants ride up during fencing movements (no skin may show at any time). Men are required to wear an athletic cup and must supply their own.

What do I need for equipment?

We can provide everything you need from our group's loaner gear (apart from athletic cups). During classes, all our loaner gear will be available. At other times, we may need to know in advance what you need. You may want to bring a water bottle. Many people also bring a towel and change of clothes for going out to dinner after practice. If you have modern fencing gear you'd like to use, bring it and we'll evaluate it to our safey standards.

Is there a cost?

The SCA is a volunteer non-profit. We do not charge for lessons or practices. Sometimes we use sites that require a rental fee (no more than a few dollars per person) -- this will be posted along with the current practice site information.

Do you do anything besides practice?

Yes! The SCA has events which feature fencing tournaments, "battles", and "wars." It's all great fun. To find out what events are happening locally, check out the East Kingdom Event List.
